small things matter: STUFF

The Rock Church of Fenton, Lake Fenton, Linden, and Byron, Michigan exists to preach the Word of God, Baptize, and Disciple STUFF

Overview

Every day we face internal struggles with our flesh and our spirit. We desire to serve and honor God with our life but then our flesh desires the things of this world. We find ourselves in one of two places. Honoring God or making excuses of why we are allowed to have or do something.

Just like the rich man who came to Jesus, we come and ask him, “how do we inherit the kingdom of God?” And just like the rich man, when he ask us to give up everything this world has to offer and given us, we walk away sad realizing that we are not willing to give up those things for Christ.

Discussion

Review:

How did you do with your time this week? What did you cut out? What did you add in to grow your relationship with God?

Questions:

  • This about the ways the desire for stuff impacts your daily life.
    • How has it impacted your relationships with others?
      • Coveting what others have
      • Disliking someone because of this jealousy
      • Choosing to be friends with someone based on what they can offer you/access to their stuff
    • How does it (the desire for stuff) impact how you spend your time?
      • Brian said last week, “saying yes to something means saying no to something else.” If you are saying “yes” to doing what it takes to get this stuff, what are you saying no to?
    • How does it impact your planning about the future?
  • What “stuff” of yours draws your attention away from God?
  • What can you do to fix this?
  • How can you choose to use your “stuff” to bless others or further the gospel?

Challenge:

  • CONTENTMENT: If you struggle with a desire for more, ask God to help you be content with what you have.
  • DONATE: Get rid of some stuff! Go home. Look for things that you a) don’t need/use anymore or b) that get in the way of your relationship with the Lord.
    • If its in good shape, bring it in next week to be donated to someone who needs it.
    • We will pack some shoeboxes with the smaller appropriate items and bring the other things to Carriagetown for the kids/teens in need there.
    • If its not in good shape or sinful, get rid of it! Take it out to the trash and don’t look back
  • BLESS: Use your money to bless others and further the kingdom, rather than to add to your kingdom of stuff!

Goal: Everyone fill one shoebox or bring 3 things to fill a shoe box by next week!
